There is nothing quite like taking a boat out on Florida’s stunning waterways. But with that freedom comes a serious responsibility. Florida’s marine environments are highly dynamic, crowded, and require a solid foundation of knowledge to navigate safely.
Whether you are a lifelong resident, a new boat owner, or a visitor renting a vessel for the weekend, getting properly trained is the single most effective step you can take to protect yourself, your passengers, and your fellow Floridians.
In Florida, safety training isn’t just a good idea—for many, it is the law.
The Law: Anyone born on or after January 1, 1988, who operates a motorized vessel of 10 horsepower or greater in Florida must successfully complete an approved boating safety course and carry a Boating Safety Education Identification Card issued by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC).
Even if you were born before 1988, taking a refresher or advanced course is highly recommended to stay up-to-date on changing local navigation laws, eco-friendly boating practices, and modern safety equipment protocols. We are working to get rid of this exception.
We are looking for two representatives in the Florida House and Senate to sponsor this bill. Once we have two sponsors then they can vote on it in the next legislative session.
